Building Credit While Living in Netherlands (US & Dutch)
Six months after moving to the Netherlands, we checked our US credit scores. One had dropped 40 points.
Panic. We'd spent years building 780+ scores. Now one was sliding.
The culprit: an old credit card closed due to inactivity. Average age of accounts dropped. Score followed.
Why US Credit Still Matters
You might think you don't need US credit if you're living in the Netherlands.
But if you return:
- Renting an apartment requires credit
- Buying a house requires credit
- Car loans require credit
- Some jobs check credit
Starting from scratch is brutal. Keep your credit healthy.
Why Credit Drops When You Move
Common problems:
Inactive cards get closed. Issuers close accounts that haven't been used in 6-12 months. This hurts your average age of accounts.
High balances get reported. Even if you pay in full, the balance on your statement date affects your utilization ratio.
Missed payments. Out of sight, out of mind. One late payment can drop your score 100 points.
Our Strategy
Keep cards active: Use each card every 3 months. Set up small recurring charges (Netflix, Spotify).
Auto-pay everything: Minimum payment from US bank account. Safety net in case we forget.
Monitor regularly: Check Credit Karma monthly. Catch problems early.
Current scores: Both back to 780+. Strategy is working.
The right credit cards make this easier. See US credit cards that work in Amsterdam for our recommendations.
Do You Need Dutch Credit?
If you're renting: No. Landlords don't usually check credit.
If you want a Dutch mortgage: Yes. Takes 1-2 years to build.
Our situation: We're renting, not buying. We don't have Dutch credit and haven't needed it.
Dutch Credit Is Different
The Netherlands uses BKR (Bureau Krediet Registratie). Unlike US credit, it mainly tracks negative information—missed payments, defaults, bankruptcies.
There's no single score like FICO. Building "good" Dutch credit mostly means avoiding bad marks.
How to build it:
- Get Dutch bank account
- Pay bills on time via direct debit
- Phone or internet contract builds history
- Time (1-2 years of history)

For US credit: Keep 2-3 cards active, set up auto-pay, monitor monthly.
