The Real Cost of Moving to Amsterdam from the US (2026)
When we were planning our move, we searched everywhere for honest numbers.
We found vague estimates and outdated posts. Nobody shared actual receipts.
So here are ours.

We budgeted $16,850. We went $1,550 over.
The Big Categories
DAFT Investment ($4,900)
The required €4,500 in your Dutch business account. Exchange rate matters—shop around for transfers. Use Wise, not your regular bank. See DAFT requirements for details.
Housing ($5,600)
First month rent ($2,100) plus security deposit ($2,100) plus two weeks of temporary housing while apartment hunting ($1,400).
Amsterdam rent reality: €1,800-2,500/month for a decent one-bedroom. Other cities are cheaper.
Shipping ($1,800)
We shipped 8 boxes—clothes, books, sentimental items. Initial quote was $900. Final cost was $1,800 (overweight fees, insurance, customs, elevator-free delivery).
Our biggest mistake: We shipped furniture. It didn't fit in our Amsterdam apartment. Sold it at a loss. Should have just brought personal items. See shipping belongings to Amsterdam.
Setup ($2,000)
Bed, mattress, small furniture, kitchen basics, bedding, groceries, bikes, SIM cards, transport cards. You're building a household from scratch.
First Year Total
Moving costs: $18,400 12 months living costs: ~$39,500 Total: ~$58,000
This assumes you're not generating income yet. If your business is already making money, out-of-pocket is lower.
How to Save
Move in off-season (October-March): Cheaper flights, less housing competition.
Consider cities outside Amsterdam: Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague are 20-30% cheaper.
Bring less stuff: Skip shipping if possible. Sell everything, start fresh.
Use Wise for transfers: Better exchange rates, lower fees. Saves $50-100 on DAFT investment alone.
Buy used: Marktplaats and Facebook Marketplace for furniture. Save 50-70%.
Is It Worth It?
$18,400 is a lot. For some, that's a year of savings.
What we got: residence permits, Schengen travel freedom, Dutch healthcare, better work-life balance, a life we designed.
For us, absolutely worth it. But we had financial stability before moving, not debt we were running from.
