Getting Your BSN Number: A Full Guide for Americans

Application Process

When we arrived in the Netherlands, we quickly learned one thing: you can't do anything without a BSN number.

Can't open a bank account. Can't register your business. Can't sign a lease. The BSN is the key to functioning in Dutch society.

What Is a BSN Number?

BSN stands for Burgerservicenummer—your Dutch social security number.

It's a 9-digit number that: Identifies you in all government systems, required for banking, healthcare, taxes, stays with you forever.

You need your BSN to: Open a Dutch bank account, register your DAFT business with KVK, sign up for health insurance, register for taxes.

When to Get Your BSN

As soon as possible after arriving. Everything else depends on it.

Better approach: Book your BSN appointment BEFORE you arrive in the Netherlands. We didn't know this and wasted two weeks.

How to Book Your Appointment

Step 1: Find your gemeente (municipality) based on where you're living. Amsterdam: amsterdam.nl, Rotterdam: rotterdam.nl, etc.

Step 2: Book online—look for "Register in the BRP" or "First registration"

Booking timeline: Amsterdam usually 1-3 weeks out. Smaller cities often within a few days.

Tip: If Amsterdam appointments are booked out, consider registering in a nearby smaller gemeente if you have flexibility on your temporary address.

What Documents to Bring

Required:

  1. Valid passport
  2. DAFT residence permit sticker
  3. Proof of address (rental contract or Airbnb confirmation)
  4. Birth certificate (sometimes required—bring just in case)

You DON'T need: Passport photos, money (registration is free), appointment confirmation (but bring it anyway)

What Happens at the Appointment

Our experience at Amsterdam Gemeente (20 minutes):

  1. Verified passports and DAFT permits
  2. Confirmed address
  3. Entered information into system
  4. Asked basic questions (date of birth, place of birth)
  5. Printed BSN numbers on official paper

They didn't ask: Proof of income, bank statements, business plan, Dutch language skills.

You get your BSN immediately—a piece of paper with a 9-digit number. No card, no fancy document.
