How to Get Your BSN Number After DAFT Visa Approval

Application Process

Your BSN (burgerservicenummer, or citizen service number) is the key that unlocks everything in the Netherlands. Without it, you can't open a bank account, get health insurance, file taxes, or do much of anything official.

Getting your BSN is one of the first things you'll do after your Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) permit is approved. Here's exactly how it works.

What Is a BSN?

The BSN is a unique personal number assigned to everyone registered in the Netherlands. Think of it like your Social Security number, but used even more broadly. Banks, employers, insurance companies, the tax authority, and healthcare providers all need it.

You'll use your BSN almost daily in the first few months as you set up your Dutch life.

How to Get Your BSN

Step 1: Register at the Gemeente

Your BSN is issued when you register your address at the gemeente (municipality). This is a mandatory step for anyone living in the Netherlands.

You'll need:

  • Your passport
  • Your DAFT residence permit
  • Proof of address (rental contract or a letter from your landlord)
  • Birth certificate (apostilled, sometimes with a sworn translation)
  • Marriage certificate if applicable

Step 2: Book an Appointment

Most gemeentes require an appointment for registration. Book online through your local gemeente's website. Wait times vary:

  • Amsterdam: 2-4 weeks for an appointment
  • Rotterdam: 1-3 weeks
  • Utrecht, The Hague, Eindhoven: Usually 1-2 weeks

Step 3: Attend Your Appointment

The appointment itself takes about 15-30 minutes. The gemeente clerk will verify your documents, enter your information into the BRP (Basisregistratie Personen---the population register), and issue your BSN on the spot.

You'll receive a printed confirmation with your BSN number. Keep this safe.

Pro Tip: Some smaller gemeentes have shorter wait times than Amsterdam or Rotterdam. If you're living near a city border, check if the neighboring gemeente has earlier availability.

What You Can Do Once You Have Your BSN

Your BSN unlocks a chain of essential tasks. For the full post-approval checklist, see what happens after DAFT approval.

  • Open a Dutch bank account (required for your business and personal finances)
  • Register for Dutch health insurance (mandatory within four months of registration)
  • Register your business at the KVK (you may need your BSN for this)
  • Apply for DigiD (your digital identity for government services)
  • File taxes with the Belastingdienst

For the next step after your BSN, see our guide on getting your DigiD.

Common Issues

No Permanent Address Yet

You need a registered address to get a BSN. If you're still in temporary housing (Airbnb, hotel), you can't register. Some temporary housing providers allow registration, but most don't. Prioritize finding a rental with a landlord who permits registration.

Long Wait Times in Amsterdam

Amsterdam's gemeente is notoriously booked up. If you're living in Amsterdam, book your appointment the moment you know your move-in date. Don't wait until you arrive.

Missing Documents

The gemeente may require a sworn Dutch translation of your birth certificate. This is separate from the apostille. Check your gemeente's specific requirements before your appointment. For address registration details, see our guide on registering your address at the gemeente.

What We Wish We Knew: We assumed our English-language birth certificate with an apostille was enough. Our gemeente also wanted a sworn translation into Dutch. This delayed our registration by two weeks while we found a sworn translator. Check your specific gemeente's requirements in advance.
