DAFT Documents Checklist: Everything You Need to Know

Application Process

When we started gathering documents for our DAFT application, we had no idea what we were getting into.

Apostilles. FBI background checks. Translated documents. It felt overwhelming.

Three months and $1,500 later, we had everything. Here's what you actually need.

The Documents You Need

1. Valid US Passport

Valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay, with blank pages for the visa sticker. If yours expires soon, renew before starting DAFT. Timeline: 6-8 weeks standard, 2-3 weeks expedited. See Passport Requirements for Moving to Netherlands.

2. FBI Background Check (Apostilled)

This is the longest part of the process—plan 12-16 weeks total for the FBI check plus apostille. Must be less than 6 months old when you submit your application. Cost: $88-138. See FBI Background Check for Netherlands.

3. Birth Certificate (Apostilled)

Certified copy from your birth state, apostilled by that state's Secretary of State. Timeline: 4-8 weeks. Cost: $35-75. See Getting Your Birth Certificate Apostilled.

4. Proof of Funds (€4,500)

Bank statement showing €4,500+ in your name, recent (within 30 days). Keep this amount in account throughout application process.

5. Business Plan

Description of your business, services, target market, basic financial projections. 2-5 pages is enough. See Business Plan Template for DAFT.

6. Proof of Health Insurance

Health insurance covering Netherlands for duration of initial stay. Travel insurance works for the application. Cost: $50-150/month. See Health Insurance for DAFT Application.

7. Application Forms

MVV application form (if applying from outside Netherlands) and residence permit application form. Available from Dutch embassy/consulate website.

8. Passport Photos

2-4 recent photos meeting biometric specifications, white background, neutral expression. Cost: $15-30. Get 6 photos—you'll need them for various applications.

9. Marriage Certificate (If Applicable)

If bringing spouse: certified copy, apostilled by state where married. Timeline: 4-8 weeks. Same process as birth certificate.

10. Document Translations

Most US documents in English don't need translation. Only translate documents in other languages. See Translating Documents for DAFT.

Total Timeline

The FBI background check drives your timeline. Plan 12-16 weeks minimum from start to submission.

What takes longest:

  • FBI background check: 8-12 weeks (use a channeler to speed this up)
  • Apostilles: 2-4 weeks each
  • Birth certificate: 2-4 weeks to arrive

Start 4-6 months before you want to move.

Common Mistakes

Starting too late: FBI background check takes 12-16 weeks. Start early.

Not getting apostilles: Documents must be apostilled. Regular notarization isn't enough.

Expired documents: FBI check must be less than 6 months old at submission.

Wrong bank statement: Must show €4,500 in YOUR name.

After Gathering Documents

  1. Schedule embassy appointment (usually 2-4 weeks out)
  2. Submit application in person
  3. Wait for processing (2-8 weeks typically)
  4. Receive DAFT permit
