Why the DAFT Visa Is Easier Than Other Dutch Options

Visa Comparison

If you're an American wanting to live in the Netherlands, you have an advantage most people don't: access to the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT).

We didn't realize how lucky we were until we talked to friends from other countries trying to immigrate to the Netherlands. Their processes were longer, more expensive, and filled with requirements we never faced.

DAFT isn't perfect—but compared to the alternatives, it's remarkably accessible.

In this guide, you'll learn:

  • How DAFT compares to other Dutch visa options
  • Why Americans have this unique advantage
  • What makes DAFT "easier" in practice
  • The trade-offs to consider

The Dutch Visa Landscape

Before we look at why DAFT is easier, let's see what other paths exist:

Skilled WorkerAnyoneJob offer + salary threshold
Startup VisaEntrepreneursFacilitator + innovative idea
Student VisaStudentsUniversity admission
Family ReunificationFamily membersSponsor in NL
EU Blue CardHighly skilledJob offer + degree

Each has its own barriers. Let's see how DAFT stacks up.

DAFT vs. Other Options: Why It's Easier

No Job Offer Required

Most visas: Need a Dutch employer to sponsor you.

DAFT: You sponsor yourself through your business.

The Skilled Worker visa, EU Blue Card, and most employment-based routes require you to find a Dutch company willing to hire you AND process your sponsorship. This creates a chicken-and-egg problem: How do you get a Dutch job without being in the Netherlands?

With DAFT, you bring your own "job"—your business. No one needs to choose you. You choose yourself.

What We Wish We Knew: We initially tried to find Dutch employment before considering DAFT. After dozens of applications with no responses, we realized DAFT was the more practical path. We weren't being rejected by employers; we were bypassing the system entirely.

No Salary Threshold

Skilled Worker visa: Minimum €5,008/month salary (age 30+) or €3,672/month (under 30).

DAFT: No minimum income requirement.

Many Americans don't command Dutch salaries at those levels, especially when starting out. Even experienced professionals may not meet the threshold in their field.

DAFT has no salary floor. Your business needs to be active and legitimate, but there's no requirement that it generate a specific income—especially not in the first years. For more on the actual costs involved, see How Much Money Do You Need for DAFT?

No Points System

Some countries (Canada, Australia, UK): Complex points-based immigration systems weighing age, education, language skills, work experience.

DAFT: No points. Just requirements you either meet or don't.

The simplicity is refreshing. You're either a US citizen or you're not. You either have €4,500 or you don't. There's no optimization, no trying to maximize your score, no uncertainty about whether you'll make the cut.

No Degree Requirement

EU Blue Card: Requires a higher education degree. Some Skilled Worker categories: Require specific qualifications.

DAFT: No education requirement whatsoever.

It doesn't matter if you have a PhD or no degree at all. DAFT doesn't ask about your educational background. Your ability to run a business is what matters—and that's demonstrated by actually running one, not by credentials.

No Dutch Language Requirement

Citizenship: Eventually requires Dutch language proficiency. Some integration paths: Require language tests.

DAFT (initial permit): No language requirement at all.

You can apply for and receive DAFT permits without speaking a word of Dutch. English is widely spoken in business settings. Language only becomes relevant years later if you pursue citizenship.

No "Innovation" Test

Startup Visa: Requires a facilitator to validate your business idea as "innovative."

DAFT: No judgment on your business idea's innovation or potential.

The Dutch Startup Visa is designed for high-growth, innovative companies. You need a facilitator (like an incubator) to sponsor you and vouch for your idea's potential. Many legitimate business ideas don't qualify because they're not "innovative" enough.

DAFT accepts normal businesses. Consulting, freelancing, e-commerce, services—all fine. You're not pitching to judges. For 20+ business ideas that work for DAFT, see What Kind of Business Can You Start?

No Quota or Lottery

US Green Card (for context): Country quotas, lottery systems, years-long backlogs. Some countries: Annual caps on immigration numbers.

DAFT: No quota. No lottery. Open to all qualifying Americans.

If you meet the requirements, you can apply. There's no limited number of spots, no annual cap, no waiting for your turn in line. This is a treaty right, not a government favor.

What Makes DAFT "Easier" In Practice

Beyond the requirements themselves, the practical experience of DAFT is simpler:

You Control the Process

With Skilled Worker, you're dependent on an employer—their timeline, their decisions, their paperwork accuracy.

With DAFT, you control everything. You decide when to start gathering documents. You choose when to apply. The delays are mostly predictable processing times, not someone else's hiring committee.

Lower Financial Barrier

€4,500 invested in your own business is genuinely accessible for many Americans. Compare to:

  • Student visa: Tuition + living costs (often €20,000+/year)
  • Startup visa: Significant business investment + facilitator fees
  • Skilled Worker: Need to be worth €60,000+/year to an employer

The €4,500 isn't a fee—it's YOUR money in YOUR business. You're not giving it away.

Renewable Indefinitely

DAFT permits renew every 2 years as long as your business remains active. Unlike some visas tied to specific employers or programs, DAFT can be your long-term home.

Clear Path to Permanent Residency

5 years on DAFT → eligible for permanent residency. The path is clear, predictable, and doesn't depend on employer sponsorship continuity.

Pro Tip: Some visa categories have more complicated paths to permanent residency. DAFT's path is straightforward: stay legal, keep your business active, reach 5 years.

The American Advantage

Why do Americans get this option when citizens of other countries don't?

Treaty History

The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty dates to 1956. It was designed to promote trade and investment between the two countries. As part of the agreement, Americans get favorable treatment for establishing businesses in the Netherlands.

This isn't a loophole—it's intentional policy that's been in place for almost 70 years. For a detailed breakdown of DAFT eligibility, see our complete DAFT requirements guide.

Reciprocity

Treaties like this typically work both ways. Dutch citizens have certain investment and business rights in the US under the same treaty (though the US side works differently).

Not Under Threat

While immigration policies in many countries tighten, DAFT has remained stable. It's an established treaty, not a discretionary program that can be cancelled easily.

Comparing Specific Alternatives

DAFT vs. Startup Visa

Business typeAny legitimate businessMust be "innovative"
Facilitator requiredNoYes
Evaluation of ideaNoYes (must pass innovation test)
Duration2 years (renewable)1 year (then convert or extend)
For whomUS citizens onlyAnyone
BureaucracyLowerHigher

Bottom line: If you're American with a normal business idea, DAFT is much easier. Startup Visa is for people (from any country) with genuinely innovative concepts who can get facilitator buy-in.

DAFT vs. Student Visa

FactorDAFTStudent Visa
Cost~€5,000 + living costsTuition (~€10,000-20,000/year) + living
Age appropriateAny ageTypically younger
Can workYes (your business)Part-time only
After completionContinue indefinitelyNeed to transition to other visa

Bottom line: If you want to study, student visa is appropriate. If you want to live and work, DAFT is usually better unless you specifically want the Dutch degree.

DAFT vs. Family Reunification

FactorDAFTFamily Reunification
Who can applyUS citizensAnyone with family in NL
DependencySelf-sufficientDependent on family sponsor
Income requirement€4,500 business investmentSponsor must meet income threshold
IndependenceFullLimited initially

Bottom line: If you have family in the Netherlands, family reunification might be an option. But it makes you dependent on your sponsor. DAFT is independent.

DAFT vs. EU Citizenship by Descent

FactorDAFTEU Citizenship by Descent
EligibilityUS citizensThose with EU ancestry
Process3-6 monthsVaries wildly (months to years)
OutcomeResidence permitFull citizenship
Right to stayAs long as permit validPermanent, unconditional

Bottom line: If you have Irish, Italian, or other EU ancestry that qualifies for citizenship by descent, that's potentially more powerful than DAFT (full citizenship vs. residence permit). But the process can be extremely complex and time-consuming. DAFT is faster and simpler if you just want to get there.

What DAFT Doesn't Give You

Let's be honest about DAFT's limitations:

Not Employment Authorization (for Others)

DAFT lets you run YOUR business. It doesn't let you work as an employee for a Dutch company. If you later want traditional employment, you'd need a different visa.

No 30% Ruling

The 30% ruling (a major tax benefit for skilled migrants) is not available to DAFT permit holders. This can mean thousands of euros less in your pocket compared to someone on a Skilled Worker visa.

Business Must Remain Active

DAFT requires ongoing business activity. You can't get the permit, then do nothing. Your business needs to actually operate. This is more effort than some other visa types that let you simply exist.

2-Year Renewals

DAFT permits renew every 2 years (until you get permanent residency). This means proving continued business activity. Skilled Worker permits tied to indefinite employment don't have this checkpoint.

Self-Employment Risk

You bear the risk of your business. No guaranteed income, no employment protections, no employer-provided benefits. For some, this is a feature. For others, it's a bug.

Is DAFT Right for You?

DAFT is easiest if you:

  • Are a US citizen
  • Want to be self-employed
  • Have a viable business idea
  • Have €4,500+ to invest
  • Value flexibility over security
  • Don't have an EU citizenship option
  • Don't have a job offer from a Dutch company

DAFT might not be best if you:

  • Have a great Dutch job offer (take the Skilled Worker visa)
  • Qualify for EU citizenship by descent (that's more powerful)
  • Strongly prefer employment over self-employment
  • Don't have a business you can run

Making the Most of the American Advantage

If DAFT is your path, maximize it:

Start Preparing Early

Documents take time. Begin gathering FBI checks and apostilles even before you're 100% committed.

Choose a Sustainable Business

Don't pick something just because it sounds good for DAFT. Pick something you'll actually run for years.

Build Financial Cushion

€4,500 is the minimum. Having more gives you breathing room and less stress.

Connect with the Community

Other DAFT holders are a valuable resource. Join Facebook groups, attend expat meetups, learn from those ahead of you.

Plan for the Long Term

DAFT can be your gateway to permanent Dutch residency. Think beyond the initial permit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is DAFT too good to be true?

A: It's legitimate and has existed since 1956. It's not a loophole—it's a treaty right. But it does require a real business, so it's not a free pass.

Q: Could DAFT be cancelled?

A: Treaties are harder to change than regular immigration policies. While nothing is guaranteed forever, DAFT has been stable for decades. The bigger risk is individual application issues, not treaty cancellation.

Q: Why doesn't everyone know about DAFT?

A: Immigration attorneys and government websites focus on mainstream options. DAFT is niche—only Americans can use it. It's well-known in the American expat community but not widely publicized.

Q: Is there a catch?

A: The "catch" is that you need to actually run a business. If you're not entrepreneurial, the requirement may feel burdensome. But for those comfortable with self-employment, there's no real catch.

Q: What do non-Americans do?

A: They use Skilled Worker, Startup Visa, Student Visa, or other options. They don't have access to DAFT. Many look at Americans with envy for this option.

The Bottom Line

DAFT is one of the most accessible immigration pathways to Europe. Not because it's a secret or a hack, but because:

  • The requirements are straightforward
  • No one else needs to pick you
  • The financial barrier is reasonable
  • The process is established and predictable

Americans are lucky to have this option. If you've been dreaming of life in the Netherlands, DAFT might be the answer. Get the full step-by-step process in our complete DAFT guide.
