DAFT vs. UK Innovator Founder Visa: Full Breakdown
The UK and the Netherlands are both popular destinations for US entrepreneurs looking to move to Europe (or near-Europe, post-Brexit). The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) and the UK's Innovator Founder visa are two of the main routes — but they're built for very different types of business owners.
We went the DAFT route and never seriously considered the UK option. After researching both, we're glad we didn't. Here's why.
The Core Difference
DAFT lets US citizens be self-employed in the Netherlands. Freelancers, consultants, online business owners — any kind of legitimate self-employment qualifies. No one evaluates whether your idea is "innovative."
The UK Innovator Founder visa requires endorsement from an approved body that evaluates your business idea for innovation, viability, and scalability. It replaced the old Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa in 2023 and is more selective.
In short: DAFT is open to any self-employment. The Innovator Founder visa is for business ideas that pass an innovation test from a UK endorsing body.
Requirements Comparison
| Requirement | DAFT (Netherlands) | Innovator Founder (UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Nationality | US citizens only | Any nationality |
| Capital | 4,500 euros | No minimum (but need funds) |
| Endorsement | Not required | Required (approved body) |
| Innovation test | No | Yes |
| Business plan | Yes (straightforward) | Yes (must pass endorsement) |
| English test | No | Yes (B2 level) |
| Background check | FBI check + apostille | Criminal record check |
| Health insurance | Required | NHS (via Immigration Health Surcharge) |
Endorsement Is the Big Hurdle
The UK Innovator Founder visa requires endorsement from one of a handful of approved bodies. These organizations evaluate your business concept for innovation, viability, and scalability. Getting endorsed can take weeks or months, and there's no guarantee.
DAFT has no equivalent gatekeeping. You demonstrate you have a viable business and 4,500 euros. The IND doesn't evaluate whether your business idea is innovative or scalable.
The English Test
The UK requires proof of English proficiency at B2 level. As a native English speaker, this isn't hard — but it's an extra step and cost. DAFT has no language requirement for the application.
Reality Check: The UK's endorsement process isn't just a formality. Endorsing bodies take their role seriously because their reputation depends on the quality of businesses they support. If your business is straightforward freelancing or consulting, you'll likely struggle to get endorsed.
Cost Comparison
| Expense | DAFT | Innovator Founder |
|---|---|---|
| Required capital | 4,500 euros | No minimum |
| Application fee | ~350 euros | ~1,200 GBP (~1,400 euros) |
| Health surcharge | N/A | ~1,035 GBP/year (~1,200 euros) |
| Health insurance | 120-180 euros/month | Included via NHS |
| English test | N/A | ~200 GBP (~230 euros) |
| Endorsement fees | N/A | Varies (some free, some charge) |
The UK's Immigration Health Surcharge adds up quickly. You pay it upfront for the duration of your visa. For a three-year visa, that's over 3,000 GBP before you've even arrived.
DAFT's total upfront costs are more modest. The 4,500-euro deposit stays in your business account — it's not a fee you lose.
Duration and Settlement
DAFT: Two-year initial permit, renewable. Path to permanent residency and Dutch citizenship after five years (with integration exam).
Innovator Founder: Three-year initial permit, extendable for three more years. Path to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after three years if your business meets specific criteria. Path to British citizenship after five years with ILR.
The UK's three-year-to-settlement path is faster on paper. But the requirement to meet specific business milestones for settlement makes it less predictable than DAFT's straightforward five-year path.
Work Restrictions
Both visas restrict you to your own business — no employment for someone else. However, the UK visa ties you more closely to your endorsed business plan. Pivoting significantly requires updated endorsement.
DAFT gives you complete flexibility. You can change your business model, take on different clients, or start a new venture entirely without notifying the IND (as long as you remain self-employed).
Post-Brexit Reality
Since Brexit, the UK is no longer part of the EU single market or Schengen area. This means:
- Your UK visa doesn't give you the right to live or work elsewhere in Europe
- Travel to the EU is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period (as a tourist)
- You can't easily expand your business into EU markets from a UK base
DAFT, by contrast, puts you in the Netherlands — a Schengen country. You can travel freely within the Schengen zone and access EU markets more directly.
What We Wish We Knew: If your goal is "live in Europe," the UK post-Brexit doesn't deliver the same experience. You're on an island with separate immigration rules from the continent. The Netherlands puts you in the heart of Europe.
Who Each Option Is Best For
Choose DAFT If:
- You're a US citizen
- You're a freelancer, consultant, or solo business owner
- You want a straightforward process without endorsement hurdles
- You want to live in continental Europe with Schengen access
- You value business flexibility
Choose Innovator Founder If:
- You have an innovative, scalable business concept
- You want access to the UK market specifically
- You can secure endorsement from an approved body
- You don't mind the higher costs and immigration health surcharge
- The faster settlement path matters to you
Honest Downsides of DAFT
DAFT restricts you to self-employment — no side jobs as an employee if business is slow. The Dutch tax system, while fair, requires careful planning. And the five-year path to citizenship requires Dutch language ability, which takes real commitment.

Our Take
For US citizens, DAFT is the better option in almost every scenario. It's cheaper, simpler, and puts you in the EU. The UK Innovator Founder visa makes sense if you have a specific reason to be in the UK — a British co-founder, UK-focused clients, or a market that's uniquely suited to the UK. Otherwise, the Netherlands offers a smoother path and better European access.

FAQ
Q: Is the UK cheaper to live in than the Netherlands? A: London is significantly more expensive than Amsterdam. Outside London, costs are comparable to Dutch cities outside Amsterdam. Neither country is cheap, but the Netherlands generally offers better value when you factor in healthcare and public services.
Q: Can I move from the Netherlands to the UK later? A: Yes, but you'd need to apply for a UK visa separately. Time spent in the Netherlands doesn't count toward UK settlement. They're completely separate immigration systems, especially post-Brexit.
Q: Do I need to speak Dutch for DAFT? A: Not for the application. But for permanent residency and citizenship, you'll need to pass the civic integration exam, which includes Dutch language proficiency.
