Rotterdam vs. Amsterdam: Cost of Living for DAFT Movers
When most Americans think about moving to the Netherlands through the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT), they think Amsterdam.
We did too. But after talking to DAFT movers who chose Rotterdam, we realized Amsterdam is not the only option -- and for many people, it is not even the best one.
Here is an honest cost comparison between the two cities.
The Quick Numbers
| Category | Amsterdam (EUR) | Rotterdam (EUR) | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent (1-bed) | 1,950 | 1,400 | 28% |
| Utilities | 155 | 145 | 6% |
| Groceries | 420 | 380 | 10% |
| Dining out | 160 | 130 | 19% |
| Transport | 55 | 50 | 9% |
| Health insurance | 140 | 140 | 0% |
| Monthly total | 2,880 | 2,245 | 22% |
These are couple numbers, based on our spending in Amsterdam and data from DAFT movers in Rotterdam. Single-person numbers run about 60-65% of these.
Reality Check: Rotterdam is about 20-25% cheaper than Amsterdam overall. The biggest difference is rent. Everything else is fairly similar.
Rent: Where the Real Savings Are
Rent is the single biggest expense for DAFT movers, and it is where Rotterdam really shines.
Amsterdam rent (2026):
- Studio: 1,200-1,700
- 1-bedroom: 1,600-2,200
- 2-bedroom: 2,100-2,900
Rotterdam rent (2026):
- Studio: 900-1,300
- 1-bedroom: 1,200-1,700
- 2-bedroom: 1,600-2,200
That is roughly 400-600 EUR per month less for a comparable apartment. Over a year, you are saving 4,800-7,200 EUR just on rent.
And here is the thing: you often get more space in Rotterdam. Dutch apartments are small everywhere, but Rotterdam apartments tend to be 10-20% larger for the same price point.
Best Rotterdam Neighborhoods for DAFT Movers
Kralingen: Leafy, residential, near Erasmus University. Popular with young professionals.
Delfshaven: Historic, diverse, more affordable. Great food scene.
Rotterdam Noord: Up-and-coming, good transit connections. Best value for space.
Centrum: Most expensive Rotterdam option, but still cheaper than Amsterdam center.

Groceries and Dining
Grocery costs are slightly lower in Rotterdam, but not dramatically. The same chains (Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Lidl) operate in both cities at similar prices.
Where you save more is dining out. Rotterdam's restaurant scene is excellent and noticeably cheaper than Amsterdam.
Dinner for two (mid-range restaurant):
- Amsterdam: 65-85 EUR
- Rotterdam: 50-70 EUR
Coffee:
- Amsterdam: 3.50-4.50 EUR
- Rotterdam: 3.00-4.00 EUR
Lunch special:
- Amsterdam: 13-17 EUR
- Rotterdam: 10-14 EUR
Pro Tip: Rotterdam's Markthal is both a tourist attraction and a legitimate place to eat well for less. The food stalls inside offer great options for 8-15 EUR. The outdoor market at Binnenrotte (Tuesday and Saturday) is one of the largest in the Netherlands.

Book a CallTransportation
Both cities have excellent public transport and cycling infrastructure.
Amsterdam: Trams, buses, metro, ferries. The GVB day pass is 9 EUR. Monthly OV subscription for city transport is about 50-60 EUR.
Rotterdam: Metro, trams, buses, water taxi. The RET system is comparable in price. Monthly subscription is about 45-55 EUR.
Cycling: Both cities are bike-friendly, though Rotterdam is flatter (yes, even flatter than Amsterdam) and has wider bike lanes. A used bike costs about the same: 100-200 EUR.
Between cities: Amsterdam to Rotterdam is 25 minutes by Intercity train. Many DAFT movers live in Rotterdam and occasionally visit Amsterdam for meetings or social events. A day return ticket is about 18 EUR, or cheaper with a dal voordeel subscription.
The Lifestyle Comparison
Cost is not everything. Here is what each city offers beyond the numbers.
Amsterdam Wins
International community: Larger expat community, more English spoken everywhere. Easier landing for newcomers.
Startup ecosystem: More coworking spaces, networking events, and tech meetups. If you need to be in "the scene," Amsterdam is the place.
Culture and tourism: World-class museums, canals, and a walkable city center.
Flights: Schiphol Airport has more direct connections to the US.
Rotterdam Wins
Affordability: 20-25% cheaper. Your DAFT business capital lasts longer.
Space: Bigger apartments, less crowded streets, more room to breathe.
Architecture: Modern, bold, post-war rebuilding created a unique city unlike anywhere else in Europe.
Diversity: Rotterdam is one of the most diverse cities in Europe. The food scene reflects this.
Less tourist pressure: Fewer crowds, more authentic daily life. You feel like a resident, not a tourist.
Port city energy: There is a working-class, get-things-done mentality that many American entrepreneurs connect with.
What We Wish We Knew: We chose Amsterdam because it was the only city we had heard of. If we were doing it again, we would seriously consider Rotterdam. The cost savings alone would have given us an extra 6 months of runway.
Business Considerations for DAFT Movers
KVK Registration
The process is identical in both cities. You register at the local KVK office. No difference in cost or requirements.
Client Perception
If your clients are international, they probably do not care whether you are in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Both are well-known cities. If you put "the Netherlands" on your invoice, nobody asks which city.
Networking
Amsterdam has more English-language business events. Rotterdam's scene is smaller but growing. The Erasmus University ecosystem brings a lot of entrepreneurial energy.
Coworking
Amsterdam has more options (WeWork, Spaces, dozens of independent spaces). Rotterdam has fewer but they are often cheaper and less crowded. Expect 150-250 EUR/month in Rotterdam vs 200-350 EUR/month in Amsterdam.
The Financial Impact Over Time
Let us run the numbers over two years:
| Amsterdam | Rotterdam | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 costs | 34,560 EUR | 26,940 EUR | 7,620 EUR |
| Year 2 costs | 34,560 EUR | 26,940 EUR | 7,620 EUR |
| 2-year total | 69,120 EUR | 53,880 EUR | 15,240 EUR |
That is over 15,000 EUR saved in two years. For a DAFT entrepreneur building a new business, that extra runway can make the difference between success and going home.

Our Recommendation
Choose Amsterdam if:
- You need the largest possible English-speaking community
- Your business relies on Amsterdam-specific networking
- You can comfortably afford 3,000+ EUR/month
- You want maximum nightlife and cultural options
Choose Rotterdam if:
- Budget is a factor (it should be for most new DAFT movers)
- You want more space for less money
- You prefer a less touristy, more "real" Dutch experience
- You are willing to trade some English-language convenience for cost savings
There is no wrong answer. Both are great cities. But Rotterdam deserves more attention than it gets from Americans planning their DAFT move.
