DigiD Setup Guide for Americans in the Netherlands

Getting Started

DigiD is one of those things nobody warns you about before moving to the Netherlands. Then you try to do anything with the government online and discover you need it for everything.

Filing taxes? DigiD. Applying for zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance)? DigiD. Checking your pension? DigiD. Communicating with the gemeente? You guessed it.

Here is how to set up DigiD after arriving in the Netherlands on a Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) visa.

What Is DigiD?

DigiD stands for Digitale Identiteit (Digital Identity). It is the Dutch government's online authentication system, similar to how the IRS uses ID.me in the US, but far more widely adopted.

Nearly every government service in the Netherlands uses DigiD for login. Many healthcare providers and financial institutions use it too. You will use DigiD regularly for years, so getting it set up early saves hassle later.

What You Need Before Applying

Before you can apply for DigiD, you need:

  • A BSN number (you get this when you register at the gemeente)
  • A registered Dutch address
  • A Dutch or international phone number for SMS verification
  • An email address

You cannot apply for DigiD without a BSN. If you have not registered at the gemeente yet, do that first.

How to Apply for DigiD

Step 1: Go to digid.nl

Visit digid.nl and click "Aanvragen" (Apply). The site has an English language option, which makes the process much easier.

Step 2: Fill In Your Details

Enter your:

  • BSN number
  • Date of birth
  • Postal code and house number
  • Email address
  • Phone number (for SMS verification)

Choose a username and password. Your username must be unique, so your first choice might be taken.

Step 3: Wait for the Activation Letter

DigiD sends an activation code by mail to your registered address. This letter usually arrives within three to five business days.

Reality Check: Yes, they verify your identity by sending physical mail. In a country that is otherwise very digital, this step feels oddly old-fashioned. But it ensures that only someone at your registered address can activate your DigiD.

Step 4: Activate Your Account

Once you receive the letter, go back to digid.nl and enter the activation code. Your DigiD is now active at the basic level.

Step 5: Set Up the DigiD App (Highly Recommended)

The DigiD app adds a higher security level and makes logging in much easier. Instead of entering a code every time, you use the app to verify your identity.

To set up the app:

  1. Download the DigiD app from the App Store or Google Play
  2. Open the app and follow the setup process
  3. Scan your passport or ID card with your phone's NFC reader
  4. Take a selfie for verification
  5. Set up a PIN code

The app setup requires a phone with NFC capability (most modern phones have this). You will need your physical passport or Dutch ID card for the NFC scan.

Pro Tip: Set up the app as soon as possible. Many government services now require the higher security level that only the app provides. Without it, you might be locked out of some online portals.

What You Can Do with DigiD

Once your DigiD is active, you can:

Tax and financial services:

  • File your tax return on the Belastingdienst website
  • Apply for zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance)
  • Apply for huurtoeslag (rental allowance) if eligible
  • Check your pension information at mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl

Government services:

  • Communicate with your gemeente
  • Update your address when you move
  • Access MijnOverheid.nl (your personal government portal)
  • Request official documents

Healthcare:

  • Access your medical records at some providers
  • Manage your health insurance through some insurer portals

Other:

  • Apply for a parking permit
  • Register a vehicle
  • Access the UWV (employee insurance agency) if applicable

Security Tips

DigiD is essentially the key to your entire Dutch life. Protect it.

  • Never share your DigiD login with anyone. No legitimate organization will ask for your DigiD password.
  • Enable two-factor authentication through the DigiD app or SMS verification.
  • Keep the app updated on your phone.
  • Use a strong, unique password that you do not use for other accounts.

What We Wish We Knew: Phishing emails pretending to be DigiD are common in the Netherlands. The government will never email you asking you to log in via a link. Always go directly to digid.nl in your browser.

Common Issues and Solutions

"My activation letter never arrived." Wait at least five business days. If it still has not arrived, you can request a new one through digid.nl. Make sure your address is correctly registered at the gemeente.

"The NFC scan for the app is not working." Remove your phone case. Hold your passport flat against the back of your phone. Keep it still for 10-15 seconds. Different phones have the NFC reader in different spots -- try moving the passport around slowly.

"I forgot my username or password." You can recover your account through digid.nl using your BSN and a new activation letter. This takes another few days, so try to avoid it.

"I changed my phone and lost access to the app." You will need to set up the app again on your new phone. You may need to request a new activation if you cannot access your account through the website.

DigiD and Your DAFT Business

As a DAFT entrepreneur, you will use DigiD for several business-related tasks:

  • Filing quarterly and annual tax returns (BTW/VAT and income tax)
  • Communicating with the Belastingdienst about your business
  • Checking your KVK registration details
  • Applying for any government subsidies or programs

Some accountants can file taxes on your behalf, but having DigiD yourself means you can always check on things directly. It is also needed to apply for the zorgtoeslag healthcare allowance if your income qualifies.

Make sure you have a Dutch phone number set up for SMS verification. While international numbers sometimes work, a Dutch number is more reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I apply for DigiD before arriving in the Netherlands? A: No. You need a BSN number first, which requires registering in person at the gemeente. You can only apply for DigiD after you have received your BSN.

Q: Can I use DigiD outside the Netherlands? A: Yes. DigiD works from anywhere with an internet connection. If you travel back to the US or elsewhere, you can still access government services. Just make sure you have the DigiD app installed and your phone with you.

Q: Do I need DigiD for my DAFT application? A: Not for the initial DAFT application, which goes through the IND. But you will need DigiD for almost everything after your initial setup, including tax filings and applying for allowances.
