Your passport is the easiest DAFT document—if it's valid.
Requirements
Your passport must be:
- Valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay
- Have at least 2 blank pages for visa sticker
- In good condition (not damaged)
- Your current legal name
When to Renew
Renew if:
- Expires within 12 months
- Less than 2 blank pages
- Damaged or worn
- Name has changed
Timeline for renewal:
- Standard: 6-8 weeks
- Expedited: 2-3 weeks ($60 extra)
Cost: $130 for passport book, $60 for expedited, $20 for overnight shipping.
How to Renew
If your passport is less than 15 years old, issued when you were 16+, undamaged, and in your current name—you can renew by mail:
- Complete Form DS-82
- Include current passport
- New passport photo
- Payment
- Mail to processing center
Processing: 6-8 weeks standard, 2-3 weeks expedited.
If you don't meet these criteria, renew in person at acceptance facility.
Passport Photos
Requirements: 2x2 inches, white background, taken within 6 months, neutral expression, no glasses.
Get extras—you'll need photos for DAFT application too. Cost: $15-30 at Walgreens, CVS, or FedEx.
Name Changes
If your name has changed, update your passport first. Bring marriage certificate or court order, apply in person.
