FBI Background Check for Netherlands: Complete Process

Application Process

The FBI background check is the longest part of the DAFT application process.

We submitted ours in January. We received it in April. Three months of waiting.

Here's how to get your FBI background check for the Netherlands, including how to speed it up.

What You Need

For DAFT, you need an FBI Identity History Summary, based on fingerprints, apostilled by the US Department of State, and less than 6 months old at application.

This is NOT a state background check, local police check, or employment background check.

Two Ways to Get It

Option 1: Direct from FBI (Slow & Cheap)

  1. Get fingerprints taken
  2. Submit to FBI
  3. Wait 12-14 weeks
  4. Send for apostille
  5. Wait 2-4 weeks

Total time: 14-18 weeks Total cost: $38

Option 2: FBI-Approved Channeler (Fast)

  1. Use an FBI-approved channeler
  2. Get fingerprints at their location
  3. Wait 2-4 weeks (channeler handles everything including apostille)

Total time: 4-8 weeks Total cost: $88-138

Our choice: We used a channeler. Worth every penny for the time savings.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Direct FBI if: You have 4-5 months before applying, budget is very tight, you don't mind waiting.

Choose Channeler if: You want to apply within 3 months, you value speed over cost, you want tracking and one service to handle everything.

Our recommendation: Use a channeler. Saving 10-12 weeks for $50-100 is worth it when planning an international move.

Common Issues

Fingerprints rejected: Poor quality prints need to be resubmitted, adding 2-4 weeks.

Lost in mail: No tracking with direct FBI. Channelers have tracking.

Expired before submission: Valid for 6 months—time it carefully.

What If You Have a Criminal Record?

Minor offenses usually aren't a problem for DAFT. Serious offenses may affect eligibility—consult an immigration lawyer.

Be honest. Hiding information is worse than disclosing it.

For details on what records matter, see DAFT Criminal Background Check: What Disqualifies You?

After You Receive It

Check everything: name spelled correctly, date of birth correct, apostille attached.

Make copies—scan and save digitally, make physical copies, keep original safe.

Bring original to embassy appointment.

FAQ

Is a channeler worth the extra cost? In our opinion, yes. Time is valuable when planning an international move.
