DigiD for DAFT Entrepreneurs: Why and How to Get It
DigiD is your digital identity in the Netherlands. If the BSN is your key to Dutch life, DigiD is the door you use it on. As a Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) entrepreneur, you'll need it for almost every government interaction.
Here's what it is and how to get it.
What Is DigiD?
DigiD (Digital Identity) is a login system used by the Dutch government and many organizations. It's how you access:
- Belastingdienst (tax authority): filing taxes, viewing tax assessments
- KVK (Chamber of Commerce): managing your business registration
- Gemeente (municipality): address changes, document requests
- Health insurance: managing your policy, applying for healthcare allowance
- MijnOverheid: your personal government portal with all official correspondence
Think of it as a single sign-on for Dutch government services. You can't avoid it.
Why DAFT Entrepreneurs Specifically Need It
As a self-employed person in the Netherlands, you interact with government systems more than the average resident. You'll use DigiD to:
- File your quarterly and annual tax returns (BTW/VAT and income tax)
- View and respond to tax assessments
- Access your KVK business profile
- Apply for government allowances (healthcare, childcare)
- Check your pension status
- Respond to official government letters (which are increasingly sent digitally through MijnOverheid)
Without DigiD, you're essentially locked out of the systems that run your business relationship with the Dutch government.
How to Get DigiD
Prerequisites
You need two things before you can apply:
- A BSN number (see our guide on getting your BSN)
- A registered Dutch address
If you don't have your BSN yet, get that first. DigiD requires it.
Step 1: Apply Online
Go to digid.nl and click "Apply." You'll enter:
- Your BSN
- Your name (as registered at the gemeente)
- Your date of birth
- A chosen username
- An email address
The application takes about five minutes.
Step 2: Wait for the Activation Letter
DigiD sends an activation code by physical mail to your registered address. This takes about 5-7 business days. Some people report waiting up to two weeks.
You cannot activate your account without this letter. There's no way to speed it up.
What We Wish We Knew: The activation letter is valid for only 20 days. If you miss it or it gets lost, you'll need to request a new one. Check your mailbox regularly after applying.
Step 3: Activate Your Account
Once you receive the letter, go to digid.nl and enter the activation code along with your chosen password. Your account is now active.
Step 4: Set Up the DigiD App (Recommended)
The DigiD app adds two-factor authentication and makes logging in faster. Download it, scan the QR code on the website, and link it to your account.
Many government services now require the DigiD app (not just the basic login). Set it up from the start.
Pro Tip: Enable SMS verification as a backup in case you lose access to the app. You don't want to be locked out of your tax portal during filing season.
Common Issues
Can't Apply Without a BSN
This catches people who try to set up everything before registering at the gemeente. You must register, get your BSN, and then apply for DigiD. There's no shortcut.
Activation Letter Doesn't Arrive
If your letter doesn't arrive within two weeks, check with your gemeente that your address is correctly registered. Then request a new activation code through digid.nl.
Foreign Phone Number
DigiD SMS verification works with Dutch mobile numbers. If you're still using a US phone number, the DigiD app is your best option for two-factor authentication. Consider getting a Dutch SIM card early.

What Comes After DigiD
Once you have DigiD, you can:
- Log into the Belastingdienst and set up your tax filing for your DAFT business
- Access MijnOverheid for official government correspondence
- Manage your health insurance and allowances
- Handle gemeente services online instead of in person
DigiD is one of those things that feels bureaucratic until you have it. Then it makes everything easier.
