DAFT Residence Permit Renewal: Process and Timeline
Two months before our DAFT permit expired, we got a letter from IND: "Your residence permit expires soon."
Panic. Turns out, renewal is much simpler than the initial application.
When to Renew
First permit: 2 years First renewal: 5 years Subsequent renewals: 5 years each
When to apply: 2-3 months before expiration
Important: If you apply before expiration, you can legally stay while application is pending.
What You Need to Prove
Active Business: Still operating, actually working, generating income. Evidence: tax returns (2 years), bank statements, sample invoices, KVK registration.
Financial Stability: Can support yourself. No official minimum, but €20,000-30,000+ annual income is reasonable.
Continued Residence: Actually living in Netherlands. Evidence: rental agreement, utility bills.
Documents You Need
Required:
- Completed application form
- Valid passport
- Passport photos (2)
- KVK extract (recent)
- Tax returns (2 years Dutch and US)
- Bank statements (3-6 months)
- Sample invoices (3-5)
- Proof of address
- Health insurance proof
- Application fee (€192)
Application Process
Step 1: Gather documents (4-6 weeks before expiration)
Step 2: Complete application form (30-45 minutes)
Step 3: Make IND appointment—call 0880430430 or book online
Step 4: Attend appointment—bring documents, biometrics taken, questions about business
Step 5: Wait for decision (4-8 weeks)
Step 6: Receive new permit (pick up at IND or mailed)

- May 15: Received IND letter (permit expires August 10)
- June 15: Attended IND appointment
- July 28: Received approval letter
- August 2: Picked up new residence permit

Tips for Smooth Renewal
Keep good records: All invoices, tax returns, bank statements organized by year.
Start early: 3 months before expiration gives you buffer time.
Maintain active business: This is what IND is checking. Keep working, generating income, filing taxes.
After Renewal
New permit: Valid for 5 years (instead of 2)
Path to permanent residence: After 5 years total, can apply for permanent residence.
